About Me

A lifetime in gardens

I’ve been designing and building gardens for over 30 years, but the

journey started much earlier. At 14, I built my first garden pond, and

that simple project sparked a lifelong passion for creating outdoor

spaces that feel personal, practical, and beautifully considered.

After leaving school, I spent five years working hands‑on with a

landscape gardener, learning the craft from the ground up. I then

moved into civil engineering, where I gained a deep understanding

of construction, groundworks, and drainage — knowledge that still

shapes every design I create today.

In 2004, I earned a Diploma with Merit from the Institute of Garden

Design, formalising the skills I’d already been developing for years.

What I do

I design gardens for private clients across Pontefract, Professional garden design in Wakefield
, and the wider West Yorkshire area. Every garden featured on this website is my own work — designed, detailed, and overseen by me from start to finish.

Alongside my private clients, I also take on corporate freelance design work for landscape contractors, property developers, and local authorities. Whether it’s a family back garden or a large‑scale development, the approach is always the same: thoughtful design, practical solutions, and clear communication.

My approach

Good garden design isn’t about trends — it’s about understanding how people actually use their outdoor space. Over the years, I’ve developed a simple set of principles that guide every project:

  • A garden should be practical as well as beautiful

  • Good design starts with listening

  • Every space has potential, no matter the size or shape

  • Construction knowledge matters — a design must work in the real world

  • Clients should always know exactly what’s happening and why

I work independently, which means when you hire me, you get me — not a team, not a handover, not a diluted version of the original idea.
