Transforming a Three‑Level Garden in Pontefract: Concept Plans and Walkthrough Animation

Designing a multi‑level garden always gives me the opportunity to create a layout that feels structured, balanced and tailored to the way a homeowner uses their outdoor space. This recent project in Pontefract involved producing two sets of concept plans and a full walkthrough animation, allowing the client to compare different material choices and focal points before committing to construction. As someone who regularly works across Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield, I know how valuable it is for clients to see their garden come to life visually at the concept stage.

Understanding the Three‑Level Garden Layout

This rear garden is naturally divided into three levels, each with its own purpose. My aim was to create a clear flow from the house down to the lower garden while giving each level a distinct identity. The concept plans explore two variations: one using sandstone paving and the other using porcelain paving, allowing the client to see how each material changes the overall feel of the space.

Level One – Relaxation Terrace and Dining Area

The top level sits directly outside the house and forms the main social zone. I designed a relaxation patio with a balustrade, creating a comfortable space where the clients can enjoy the sun and look out across the rest of the garden. Alongside this, I added a dedicated dining terrace with a pergola, giving the area a sheltered, outdoor‑room feel. In one version of the concept, this level is finished in warm sandstone paving, while the alternative design uses sleek porcelain paving for a more contemporary look. Both options work beautifully, but each creates a very different atmosphere.

Level Two – Focal Point Feature, Formal Lawn and Planted Borders

Steps lead down to the second level, where the garden opens into a more formal arrangement. This tier is designed to act as a visual anchor between the upper and lower levels. In one version of the concept, I introduced a focal‑point water feature to create movement and sound. In the alternative version, I replaced the water feature with a specimen tree, giving the space a sculptural, architectural centrepiece. Both options sit within a structured layout that includes a formal lawn and planted borders, helping to soften the space and frame the views down to the lower garden.

Level Three – Outdoor Room and Family Space

The lowest level is designed with family life in mind. I created a dedicated outdoor room that can be used throughout the year, along with a generous lawn area where the client’s child can play safely. Planted borders frame the space and help create a sense of enclosure, making this level feel private and welcoming. The stepped layout ensures that the lower garden remains visually connected to the rest of the design while still offering a distinct purpose.

Walkthrough Animation – Bringing the Design to Life

To help the client fully understand how the garden works as a whole, I produced a walkthrough animation showing the movement between each level. This visual tool is especially valuable for multi‑level projects, as it demonstrates how the terraces connect, how the steps guide movement and how the outdoor room, dining space and relaxation areas interact. Homeowners across Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield often find animations like this incredibly helpful, particularly when their gardens involve slopes or tiered layouts.

Why Concept Plans Matter

Concept plans allow me to refine the layout, test ideas and ensure the garden works perfectly for the client’s lifestyle before any construction begins. They also give homeowners confidence in the design direction, especially when comparing different materials or focal points. You can learn more about my design process on the
