Designing a garden that feels structured, practical and visually striking is always my goal, and this latest project in Ackworth brings together everything I aim for in a modern outdoor living space. These two concept plans — supported by a full walkthrough animation — show how I transform a rear garden into a multi‑zone layout with an outdoor kitchen, fire pit, pergola, raised beds and strong planting structure.
As with all my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design projects, the focus is on clean geometry, natural flow and materials that elevate the space.
A Garden Designed for Modern Outdoor Living
This Ackworth garden has been designed as a series of connected zones, each one serving a clear purpose while contributing to the overall balance of the layout.
A Central Lawn Framed by Structure
The lawn sits at the heart of the design, framed by porcelain paving, sandstone cobble paths and raised beds. This creates a strong visual anchor and gives the garden a sense of openness.
Defined Pathways for Natural Movement
Sandstone cobble set paths guide you through the garden, linking the outdoor kitchen, pergola, seating areas and planting zones. The flow is intentional, making the space easy to navigate and enjoyable to use.
A Fully Equipped Outdoor Kitchen Designed for Real Living
The outdoor kitchen is the centrepiece of this Ackworth garden design, and it’s been planned with the same level of detail I bring to all my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design projects. For me, an outdoor kitchen isn’t just an add‑on — it’s a functional, social hub that transforms how a garden is used throughout the year.
A Practical Cooking Space Built for Everyday Use
I’ve designed the kitchen to be genuinely usable, not just decorative. The layout includes a dedicated worktop/bar area, integrated appliances, storage, and space for food preparation. Everything is positioned to make cooking outdoors feel effortless, whether it’s a quick mid‑week meal or a full weekend gathering.
The canopy above provides shelter from the elements, meaning the kitchen can be used in all seasons. Skylights bring in natural light, keeping the space bright and comfortable without feeling enclosed.
Materials That Elevate the Space
The kitchen is built using a combination of brick, timber and porcelain paving — materials chosen for their durability and visual impact. Brick pillars and raised beds tie the kitchen into the rest of the garden, while the porcelain paving creates a clean, modern finish that’s easy to maintain.
These materials also help define the cooking zone, giving it a strong architectural presence without overwhelming the rest of the garden.
A Social Hub for Family and Friends
The outdoor kitchen connects directly to the main seating areas, making it the natural gathering point during social occasions. Guests can sit at the bar, relax by the fire pit or enjoy the pergola seating while still being part of the cooking experience.
This layout encourages interaction and creates a seamless flow between cooking, dining and relaxing — something I always aim for in my outdoor living designs.
Designed to Complement the Entire Garden Layout
The kitchen isn’t isolated; it’s integrated into the wider structure of the garden. Pathways, planting, lighting and seating zones all connect back to it, ensuring it feels like a natural extension of the home rather than a standalone feature.
This is especially important in a multi‑zone garden like this one, where each area needs to work independently but also contribute to the overall flow.
Fire Pit, Pergola & Relaxation Zones
The fire pit area provides a warm, atmospheric space for evening use, while the pergola adds height, shade and architectural interest.
A Pergola That Frames the Space
The pergola creates a semi‑enclosed seating area that feels intimate without blocking light. It adds structure and becomes a focal point within the garden.
Layered Planting for Year‑Round Interest
Raised beds and specimen plants in containers bring colour, texture and seasonal movement into the space. The planting softens the hard landscaping and ties the whole design together.
A Garden That Works for Every Household
From the outdoor kitchen to the lawn and seating areas, every element has been positioned to maximise usability while keeping the garden visually cohesive.
Two Concept Plans, One Unified Vision
Both concept plans share the same core structure but offer variations in layout, materials and planting emphasis. The walkthrough animation brings these ideas to life, helping the clients visualise how the garden will look and feel once completed.
Bringing the Ackworth Garden to Life
This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can transform a rear garden into a multi‑functional outdoor living space. Whether I’m working in Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster or Sheffield, my approach remains the same: strong layout, practical features and a design that feels timeless and tailored to the client.
