A Multi‑Level Family Garden Transformation in Batley.

Designing a large, multi‑level garden gives me the opportunity to create a space with real depth, structure and personality. This recent project in Batley allowed me to explore a layout that works beautifully for family life while still feeling elegant and cohesive. As someone who specialises in Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design, I always aim to create gardens that feel both practical and visually striking, and this design is a perfect example of that balance.

Understanding the Multi‑Level Layout

The garden sits on several levels, each with its own purpose and character. My aim was to create a design that flows naturally from one area to the next, with clear transitions and strong visual connections. The retaining walls at the rear and side of the garden form the backbone of the structure, giving the space definition and helping to manage the changes in height.

Creating a Cohesive Structure

I designed the layout so the garden feels unified from the moment you step outside. The levels are connected through wide, comfortable steps that guide you down onto the main patio, while the retaining walls and raised beds help anchor the design and create a sense of permanence.

Paving Around the Property

The paving that wraps around the property forms the foundation of the design. I offered the choice of Indian sandstone or porcelain, depending on whether the client prefers a more traditional, textured finish or a sleek, contemporary look. Both materials work beautifully with the architecture of the house and tie the different areas of the garden together.

H3: A Practical and Stylish Circulation Route

This paved route provides easy access around the property and connects directly to the steps that lead down into the main garden. It also frames the lower level, helping the space feel open and well‑organised.

The Main Patio – A Flexible Space for Relaxation and Entertaining

The large patio sits at the heart of the garden. I designed this area to be flexible, giving the client the option to keep it open or introduce a pergola for shade and structure. The proportions of the patio make it ideal for outdoor seating, social gatherings or simply relaxing while watching the children play on the lawn.

Stone Raised Beds to Match the Building

The raised beds surrounding the patio are built in stone to match the property, creating a seamless connection between the house and the garden. These beds introduce height, texture and planting opportunities that soften the hard landscaping and bring the space to life.

A Rectangular Lawn for Family Play

The rectangular lawn forms a dedicated play area for the children. Its simple shape makes it easy to maintain and gives the garden a sense of order and calm. Positioned between the patio and the upper levels, the lawn acts as a green centrepiece that can be enjoyed from every angle.

A Space Designed for Family Living

The lawn is large enough for games and activities while still leaving room for planting and pathways. It creates a natural buffer between the more structured areas of the garden and adds a sense of openness to the design.

Side Patio with Dining Area and Timber Canopy

To the side of the property, I designed a dedicated dining area. This space is sheltered by a timber canopy, making it ideal for outdoor meals in all weather. The side patio connects back to the steps, creating a loop through the garden that feels intuitive and easy to navigate.

A Comfortable, Social Outdoor Room

This dining area feels like an extension of the home, with enough space for a full dining set and the option to incorporate lighting, heating or decorative elements to enhance the atmosphere.

Optional Outdoor Kitchen

For clients who enjoy cooking and entertaining outdoors, I included the option for an outdoor kitchen. This can be positioned near the main patio or the side dining area, depending on how the space will be used. The layout allows for a built‑in grill, worktops and storage, creating a practical and stylish cooking zone.

Enhancing the Garden’s Social Potential

An outdoor kitchen transforms the garden into a true entertaining space, allowing the family to cook, dine and relax outdoors without needing to move back and forth to the house.

Planting Throughout the Design

Planting plays a key role in softening the structure of the garden. I introduced a mix of evergreen shrubs, seasonal colour and textural contrast to ensure the space feels vibrant throughout the year. The planting frames the pathways, highlights the raised beds and enhances the transitions between levels.

Creating a Balanced, Natural Atmosphere

The planting is arranged to complement the architecture of the house and the stonework of the raised beds, creating a garden that feels both natural and refined.

Walkthrough Animation to Bring the Design to Life

To help the client fully understand the layout, I produced a walkthrough animation that shows how the garden flows from one level to the next. This visual tool highlights the relationship between the patios, lawn, steps and planting, making it easy to imagine how the space will feel once built.

Final Thoughts

This Batley project showcases how thoughtful design can transform a large, multi‑level garden into a practical, family‑friendly and visually cohesive outdoor space. Whether I’m working on Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster or Sheffield garden design, my focus is always on creating gardens that feel personal, functional and beautifully crafted.
