Designing a compact rear garden in Leeds gave me the opportunity to create a modern, structured layout that feels calm, functional and beautifully connected. As with all my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design projects, I focused on maximising the space through strong geometry, clean lines and a layout that works effortlessly for everyday living.
Understanding the Space and the Client Vision
The client wanted a contemporary garden that offered shelter, structure and a clean, low‑maintenance finish. The space needed to feel organised and practical, with room for outdoor dining, relaxation and discreet storage. My concept plan was developed to bring clarity to the layout and ensure every part of the garden had purpose and visual balance.
My Design Intent and Overall Layout
My intention was to create a layout that feels balanced and easy to navigate, with a strong central axis and clearly defined zones. The garden is compact, so the structure of the design needed to do most of the visual work. I focused on creating a sheltered seating area beneath a louvered pergola, establishing a clear flow from the house to the rear boundary, and using rendered raised beds to give the garden height, depth and architectural strength. This approach reflects the way I design small spaces across my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design work.
Sheltered Seating with a Louvered Pergola
The louvered pergola forms the main architectural feature of the garden. Its adjustable slats allow the client to control light and shade throughout the day, making the seating area usable in a wide range of weather conditions. The pergola creates a defined outdoor room that feels connected to the house while still offering a sense of retreat. Its clean, modern lines complement the overall layout and help anchor the design.
Rendered Raised Beds for Structure and Height
Rendered raised beds frame the garden and give the layout its strong, contemporary character. They define the boundaries of the space and introduce height variation, which is essential in a compact garden where structure plays a key role in the overall feel. The rendered finish creates a crisp contrast against the porcelain paving and helps guide the eye through the garden. These raised beds also provide opportunities for integrated lighting, which enhances the space during the evening.
Porcelain Paving for a Contemporary Finish
Porcelain paving was chosen for its smooth surface, consistent colour and ability to visually expand the space. Its refined appearance creates a seamless connection between the house and the garden, making the layout feel larger and more open. Porcelain works perfectly with the rendered walls and the modern lines of the louvered pergola, giving the entire garden a cohesive, contemporary aesthetic.
Integrated Storage for a Clean, Uncluttered Space
Storage is essential in a small garden, but it must be discreet. I incorporated storage into the layout so it blends naturally with the raised beds and boundary lines. This keeps the garden tidy without interrupting the clean, modern aesthetic. The storage sits comfortably within the overall design, maintaining the simplicity and order of the space.
Bringing the Layout to Life with a Walkthrough Animation
To help the client fully understand the proportions, transitions and overall feel of the garden, I produced a walkthrough animation. This visual tool shows how the louvered pergola frames the seating area, how the raised beds define the layout, how the porcelain paving connects the zones and how the storage integrates seamlessly into the design. Walkthrough animations are especially valuable in compact gardens, where layout decisions have a significant impact on usability and atmosphere.
Final Thoughts
This Leeds garden layout plan demonstrates how a small rear garden can be transformed through thoughtful planning, modern materials and strong structural elements. Whether I am working on Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster or Sheffield garden design projects, my focus is always on creating outdoor spaces that feel personal, practical and beautifully crafted.
