Designing gardens that balance structure, elegance and usability is at the core of my work, and these latest concept plans show how a traditional layout can be elevated with modern materials and strong architectural features. This design brings together porcelain paving, Indian sandstone, cobble sets, raised beds, a central fountain and a garden building to create a timeless outdoor space that works beautifully for everyday living. As someone who regularly works across Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield, I always focus on creating gardens that feel cohesive, practical and visually striking from every angle.
A Garden Built Around Symmetry, Structure and Flow
This garden is designed around a strong central axis, with a pathway leading directly from the house to the main focal point. The layout uses symmetry to create balance, while the planting and architectural features soften the structure and add depth. The combination of porcelain paving on the upper terrace and Indian sandstone with cobble sets throughout the rest of the garden gives the space a refined yet grounded character.
Porcelain Paving on the Upper Patio
The top patio, directly outside the house, is finished in porcelain paving. This material gives the terrace a clean, contemporary feel and works beautifully with the architecture of the property. The porcelain creates a crisp transition from the interior to the garden and provides a durable, low‑maintenance surface for seating, dining and everyday use. From this elevated position, the view down the central pathway frames the entire garden.
Indian Sandstone and Cobble Sets Throughout the Garden
Beyond the upper terrace, the garden transitions into Indian sandstone paving and cobble set detailing. These materials introduce warmth and texture, giving the pathways and lower terraces a more traditional feel. The cobble sets define edges and junctions, adding character and helping to guide movement through the space. This combination of porcelain and sandstone creates a subtle contrast that enhances the overall design without feeling disjointed.
A Central Fountain as the Main Focal Point
At the heart of the garden sits a circular paved area with a tiered fountain. This feature anchors the entire layout and draws the eye from every direction. The surrounding planting softens the structure and adds seasonal interest, while the circular form contrasts beautifully with the straight lines of the pathways and raised beds. The fountain creates movement and sound, giving the garden a calm and elegant atmosphere.
Raised Beds, Planting and Multi‑Level Interest
Raised brick planters frame the pathways and seating areas, adding height and structure to the garden. The planting includes a mix of shrubs, perennials and small trees, creating depth and colour throughout the year. The multi‑level arrangement ensures that the garden feels immersive and layered, with each area offering a slightly different perspective. The planting softens the architectural lines and helps the garden feel established and welcoming.
A Garden Building for Work, Relaxation or Hobbies
At the far end of the garden, a modern garden building provides a flexible space that can be used as an office, studio or summerhouse. Its position creates a strong visual anchor and completes the central axis of the design. Large glazing allows views back across the garden, making the building feel connected to the rest of the space rather than separate from it.
Walkthrough Animation – Understanding the Garden as a Whole
To help the client fully understand how the materials, levels and features work together, I produced a walkthrough animation. This allows them to experience the garden as if they were walking through it, seeing how the porcelain terrace leads into the sandstone pathways, how the fountain becomes the central focus and how the garden building completes the journey. Clients across Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield often find animations like this invaluable when visualising their future garden.
