A Modern Multi‑Zone Garden Design in Ackworth

Designing a rear garden that feels structured, practical and visually balanced is always my priority, and this latest project in Ackworth brings together everything I aim for in a modern outdoor living space. These concept plans — supported by a full walkthrough animation — show how I transform a blank or outdated garden into a series of connected zones that work beautifully for everyday living, entertaining and family life.

As with all my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design projects, the focus is on strong layout, clear flow and materials that elevate the space.

A Garden Designed Around Structure, Flow and Everyday Living

This rear garden has been designed as a sequence of purposeful spaces, each one connected by clean lines, defined pathways and carefully considered planting. The aim is always to create a garden that feels calm, organised and enjoyable to use throughout the year.

A Central Lawn Framed by Strong Geometry

The lawn sits at the heart of the design, framed by porcelain paving, raised beds and structured planting. This creates a natural focal point and gives the garden a sense of openness while still feeling enclosed and private.

Defined Pathways for Natural Movement

Sandstone cobble set paths guide you through the garden, linking the outdoor kitchen, pergola, seating areas and planting zones. This ensures the space feels intuitive and easy to navigate.

Outdoor Kitchen, Canopy & Social Spaces

One of the standout features of this design is the fully equipped outdoor kitchen positioned beneath a timber canopy. This creates a sheltered, practical cooking space that feels like a natural extension of the home.

A Dedicated Cooking & Dining Zone

The outdoor kitchen includes a worktop/bar area, integrated appliances and plenty of space for food preparation. It’s designed for year‑round use and works perfectly for clients who enjoy entertaining outdoors.

Fire Pit & Evening Seating Area

A dedicated fire pit zone provides a warm, inviting space for evenings. Surrounded by comfortable seating and atmospheric planting, it becomes a natural gathering point for family and friends.

Pergola, Raised Beds & Planting Structure

The pergola adds height, shade and architectural interest, creating a semi‑enclosed seating area that feels intimate without blocking light. Raised beds — built in brick or sleepers depending on the concept — allow for layered planting that brings colour, texture and seasonal movement into the garden.

Planting That Softens the Structure

The planting palette is designed to complement the hard landscaping, with a mix of shrubs, perennials and specimen plants in containers. This softens the geometry and adds depth to the overall design.

Family‑Friendly Features & Practical Details

This Ackworth garden has been designed with real life in mind. Play equipment, a greenhouse, decorative gravel areas and bark mulch zones all work together to create a garden that’s both beautiful and functional.

A Space That Works for Every Member of the Household

From the outdoor kitchen to the lawn and play areas, every element has been positioned to maximise usability while keeping the garden visually cohesive.

Two Concept Plans, One Vision

Both concept plans share the same core structure but offer variations in layout, materials and planting emphasis. The walkthrough animation brings these ideas to life, helping the clients visualise how the garden will look and feel once completed.

Bringing the Ackworth Garden to Life

This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design can transform a rear garden into a multi‑functional outdoor living space. Whether I’m working in Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster or Sheffield, my approach is always the same: strong layout, practical features and a design that feels timeless and personal to the client. If you’re thinking about transforming your garden and want a design that’s tailored to the way you live, get in touch, and I’d be happy to help you plan your space.
