Turning the Chosen Concept into a Buildable Garden Design

Once a client has selected their preferred concept, the next stage of my design process is to turn that idea into a detailed garden layout plan.

This project is a good example of how much more information goes into the final layout than simply showing where the patio, lawn and planting will sit.

The finished design brings together a large family lawn, several seating areas, a timber pergola, outdoor kitchen, hot tub, sauna, planting, raised beds and a redesigned front garden. Every area has been considered in relation to the house, access, levels and the way the family will actually use the garden.

A Garden Designed Around Family Life

One of the main priorities with this garden was making sure the space didn't become dominated by patios and outdoor living features.

There is still a generous amount of lawn, giving the family plenty of flexible open space for children, games and everyday use.

Rather than placing everything around one large terrace, I divided the garden into a series of connected areas.

This makes a larger garden much more interesting to move through and allows different parts of it to be used at different times of the day.

The main lawn remains open, while the more adult outdoor living areas are concentrated closer to the house and towards the rear of the property.

That separation means the garden can work for the whole family without one use compromising another.

Indian Sandstone and Cobble Set Detailing

Indian sandstone paving is used throughout much of the design, with Raj Green cobble sets providing definition around paths and patios.

I like using a secondary material around the edges of paving because it gives a layout much stronger definition and helps individual areas feel intentional rather than simply being expanses of stone.

The sandstone is also used to create a circular seating area within the lawn.

This gives the garden another destination away from the house and provides somewhere quieter to sit while still remaining connected to the rest of the design.

A Timber Pergola to Define the Seating Area

A timber pergola sits alongside the house and forms an important transition between the main garden and the outdoor living spaces.

It gives the seating area height and structure without enclosing it.

The timber also helps soften the amount of brick and paving around the property and introduces a warmer material into the design.

Trellis panels can be incorporated into the pergola to provide additional screening and support climbing plants as they establish.

Pergolas, screening, raised beds, garden structures and other features can completely change the character of an outdoor space. I look at these in more detail on my Landscape Features page.

Creating a Proper Outdoor Living Area

At the rear of the garden, the layout changes character completely.

This part of the garden has been designed as a dedicated relaxation and entertaining area, incorporating lounge furniture, additional seating and a timber-built outdoor kitchen.

Rather than simply positioning a BBQ against a fence, I design outdoor kitchens as part of the overall garden.

The cooking area needs to relate properly to the seating, circulation routes and surrounding planting so that it feels like part of the design rather than something added afterwards.

Through Food & Fire Outdoor Living, I can design outdoor kitchens specifically around the available space, with options for BBQs, pizza ovens, preparation areas, storage and worktops.

In this garden, the kitchen sits comfortably within the main social area so whoever is cooking remains part of what is happening around them.

Hot Tub and Sauna Area

The hot tub and sauna give the rear garden another purpose entirely.

The plan provides for a 2.4m x 2.4m hot tub alongside a sauna approximately 3.1m x 2.1m.

Rather than placing them immediately outside the back door, I've located them towards the end of the garden where the space feels more private and separate from everyday family activity.

A raised brick planter helps soften this section and prevents the hot tub from simply sitting within a large paved area.

Planting, specimen containers and surrounding greenery will give the space a much more relaxing atmosphere once established.

There are also practical considerations shown on the final plan, including steps, drainage, paving levels and circulation around the hot tub and sauna.

Those details are important because a feature may look good in isolation, but it still needs to work safely and practically within the finished garden.

Planting to Join the Different Areas Together

The planting is deliberately spread throughout the layout rather than being confined to one border around the outside.

Raised brick beds bring plants closer to the seating areas, while beds around the pergola, outdoor kitchen and hot tub help soften the harder landscaping.

Specimen planting also provides height and focal points where they are needed.

This approach helps the different areas feel connected.

Even though the garden contains several separate zones, the planting provides a common thread running through the whole design.

A Front Garden That Belongs to the Same Property

The design doesn't stop at the back garden.

The front of the property has also been considered so that it feels connected to the rest of the scheme.

A circular feature bed with a specimen tree creates a strong focal point close to the house, while planting along the boundaries softens the driveway.

The layout includes a bird bath, cobble-set mowing strip, sandstone paving and a ramp to help manage access.

Window planters and planting around the property add further colour and prevent the front garden from becoming dominated by vehicles and paving.

The aim is for someone arriving at the house to immediately feel that the front and rear gardens have been designed as part of the same property.

Why the Dimension Plan Matters

Alongside the colour garden layout plan, I also produce a detailed dimension plan.

This is where the design moves from an attractive visual idea to something that can actually be set out and constructed.

The plan shows critical widths, radii, distances, building relationships and positions of the various garden features.

It gives the contractor accurate information to work from rather than expecting them to interpret dimensions from a concept drawing.

This level of detail is one of the most important differences between a garden idea and a professional garden design.

Bringing the Garden to Life with 3D Visuals

Plans are essential, but not everyone finds it easy to imagine the finished garden from a two-dimensional drawing.

That's why my garden plans are accompanied by 3D imagery.

The visuals for this project allow the clients to see the front garden, pergola, seating areas, family lawn, sauna, hot tub, outdoor kitchen and planting from a series of viewpoints.

It also helps show scale.

A feature that looks quite small on a drawing can feel very different when viewed at eye level within the garden.

Every Garden Plan Comes with a Walkthrough Animation

Every garden layout I produce also comes with a walkthrough animation.

The animation allows you to effectively move through the proposed garden before construction begins, seeing how the different areas connect and how the proportions feel from ground level.

For clients, I find this particularly useful when deciding on features, furniture positions and relationships between the different spaces.

The combination of scaled plans, dimensions, 3D imagery and animation gives a far clearer understanding of the proposed garden than a plan alone.

From Garden Plan to Construction

A detailed garden layout gives everyone involved in the project the same information.

The client can understand exactly what is being proposed, while contractors have a clear set of drawings from which to price and construct the garden.

If required, I can also provide project monitoring during construction, helping answer questions, resolve details and ensure the finished garden follows the agreed design.
