Designing this rear garden in Pontefract gave me the opportunity to create a modern, structured layout built around an existing pond that the client wanted to retain and enhance. As with all my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design projects, my focus was on creating a layout that feels calm, balanced and beautifully connected, while making the most of the existing features already in place.
Understanding the Space and the Client Vision
The garden already included a pond, but it sat low to the ground and lacked presence. The client wanted it to become a key feature within a more contemporary layout. My concept plans were developed to raise the pond, improve its proportions and integrate it into a stronger, more cohesive design. The brief also included options for a pergola, porcelain paving with porcelain setts, new planting, a lawn area and retaining walls to the rear.
My Design Intent and Overall Layout
My intention was to create a layout that feels structured and easy to navigate, with the raised pond acting as the central anchor point. The garden needed a clear flow from the house to the rear boundary, with each element working together to create a sense of order and calm. I focused on clean lines, strong geometry and a layout that balances hard landscaping with soft planting. This approach reflects the way I design small and medium‑sized spaces across my Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design work.
Enhancing the Existing Pond with a Raised Design
The existing pond was an important part of the garden, but it needed more presence. By raising the pond, I was able to give it stronger proportions and a more architectural feel. The raised structure creates a focal point that draws the eye through the garden and helps define the surrounding layout. It also allows the pond to sit comfortably within the new paving and planting, making it feel intentional rather than inherited.
Pergola Options to Frame the Seating Area
The concept plans include two pergola options, allowing the client to choose the style that best suits their taste and lifestyle. One option is a modern louvered pergola, offering adjustable shade and a sleek, contemporary look. The other is a timber pergola, which introduces warmth and texture while still complementing the clean lines of the layout. Both options create a defined outdoor room and help anchor the seating area within the garden.

Porcelain paving forms the main surface throughout the garden, chosen for its durability, low maintenance and crisp, modern appearance. The smooth finish and consistent colour help visually expand the space and create a seamless connection between the house and the garden. Porcelain setts are used to edge the paving, adding detail and definition without interrupting the clean lines of the layout. This combination gives the garden a refined, contemporary feel.
Planting to Soften the Structure
The planting is designed to soften the strong geometry of the hard landscaping while maintaining a modern aesthetic. The raised pond, retaining walls and pergola create clear architectural lines, and the planting introduces movement, texture and seasonal interest. The planting palette is chosen to complement the porcelain paving and the rendered surfaces, ensuring the garden feels cohesive throughout the year.
Lawn and Retaining Walls to Shape the Space
A simple, well‑proportioned lawn sits at the heart of the garden, providing a calm, open space that contrasts with the more structured elements around it. Retaining walls to the rear help manage the change in levels and create a strong backdrop for planting. These walls also help frame the raised pond and give the garden a sense of depth and enclosure.
Bringing the Layout to Life with a Walkthrough Animation
To help the client fully understand how the garden will feel, I produced a walkthrough animation that shows the transitions between spaces, the relationship between the raised pond and the seating area, and the overall flow of the layout. Walkthrough animations are especially valuable in gardens with multiple structural elements, as they allow the client to visualise how each feature interacts with the others.
