Introduction
As part of my work at MP Landscape & Garden Design, I recently created two detailed concept plans and a walkthrough animation for a contemporary rear garden in Wakefield. These designs show how I approach each project with precision, tailoring materials and layouts to suit the property while ensuring the garden is both stylish and practical. My focus is always on creating outdoor spaces that feel personal, functional, and connected to the home.
Raised Beds: Two Distinct Finishes
Rendered Raised Beds
In the first concept, I designed raised beds finished with render to match the property’s exterior walls. This creates a seamless, modern look where the garden feels like a natural extension of the house. The rendered finish highlights the planting, giving clean lines and a crisp backdrop that works beautifully with contemporary architecture.
Brick Raised Beds
The second concept uses brick raised beds that echo the property’s existing brickwork. This option adds warmth and texture, blending the garden with the home’s traditional materials. Brickwork introduces a timeless quality, ensuring the garden feels rooted in the property’s character while still offering a modern layout.
Water Feature in Corten Steel
Both concepts include a raised water feature crafted from corten steel. I chose this material for its rich, rust‑like patina that contrasts elegantly with porcelain paving and lush planting. The gentle sound of water adds atmosphere, creating a calming focal point that enhances the garden’s sense of retreat.
Porcelain Paving and Stepping Stones
Porcelain paving was specified for the main patio areas due to its durability, low maintenance, and sleek finish. Stepping stones lead across the lawn, guiding visitors towards a secondary seating area or arbour. This pathway creates a sense of journey through the garden, encouraging exploration and offering different perspectives of the space.
Outdoor Living Spaces
On the main patio, I ensured there is room for relaxing, dining, and cooking. The layout accommodates a BBQ, a dining table, and comfortable seating, making it a versatile hub for entertaining. By balancing open space with defined zones, the patio becomes the heart of the garden — perfect for summer evenings, family gatherings, or quiet moments outdoors.
Regional Expertise
As a qualified garden designer based in Ackworth, I specialise in projects across Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster, and Sheffield garden design. Every concept plan reflects my commitment to blending contemporary style with practical outdoor living. Whether it’s matching materials to the property or introducing features like raised beds and water elements, I design gardens that feel tailored, welcoming, and enduring.
Conclusion
These Wakefield concepts highlight how thoughtful design choices — from materials to layout — can transform a rear garden into a contemporary outdoor living space. By combining rendered or brick raised beds, corten steel water features, porcelain paving, and versatile seating areas, I create gardens that are both functional and visually striking.
