As part of my ongoing garden design projects in Wakefield, I’ve been developing a series of bespoke outdoor spaces that balance structure, natural materials, and flowing movement. Recent designs in the area have included outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, and multi-level garden layouts — each tailored to suit the character of the property and surrounding landscape. In this concept, the focus is on a rill water feature that flows through the garden, incorporating stone steps and a handcrafted trough to create a timeless and tranquil focal point.
A Water Feature Designed for Flow and Tranquillity
The water feature begins as a narrow rill — a shallow, linear channel that runs gently through the garden. I’ve designed the rill to flow seamlessly through the landscape, allowing the soft sound of water to enhance the overall ambiance. As the water moves, it passes down a series of subtle steps, each creating a small drop to introduce texture and rhythm into the design.
The final stage of the feature sees the water gently cascading into astone trough, which acts as both the collection point and a sculptural focal element. The trough brings a sense of permanence and craftsmanship to the garden, using natural stone that ties in with the paving and retaining walls found throughout the design. Read my client reviews
Integrating the Water Feature into the Garden
This garden in Wakefield features multiple levels, with steps leading between patios and terraces. The rill design follows the natural gradient of the garden, using its slope to create movement without the need for a large pump system.
The combination of stone, sandstone paving, and planting softens the geometry of the design, creating a natural balance between structure and flow. Lighting is integrated along the rill and beneath the stone trough to highlight the movement of the water at night, giving the feature an entirely different character after dark. In this Wakefield project, the rill also acts as a design link between different garden levels, helping to guide the eye through the landscape while introducing a sense of calm and continuity. See more of my services page
