When I was asked to create garden layout plans for a small rear garden in Wakefield, my goal was to turn a compact space into a calm, inviting garden full of personality. Working across Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design projects, I’ve learnt that the right layout can completely transform even the tightest of spaces, making them feel larger and more practical while maintaining style and character.
For this first concept, I designed the garden around curves and flowing lines. The porcelain paving forms smooth, sweeping areas, while sandstone cobble-set paths guide movement naturally through the space. Gentle curves create planting pockets that soften the hard landscaping and give the garden a relaxed, organic feel. This approach not only maximises the sense of space but also creates a journey through the garden, encouraging exploration from one area to the next.
A timber canopy with a solid roof forms a sheltered outdoor room, perfect for relaxing, dining, or simply enjoying the garden in any weather. In one corner, I positioned a patio area with a fire pit, creating a cosy spot for evenings with friends or family. Decorative gravel adds texture and breaks up the paving while keeping maintenance low. Thoughtful planting throughout the curves brings year-round interest, softens the hard landscaping, and adds layers of colour and texture.
A water feature acts as a calming focal point, providing gentle movement and sound that enhances the peaceful atmosphere. This combination of flowing layout, planting, and structural elements creates a garden that feels contemporary but natural, ideal for Wakefield gardens or projects in Pontefract, Doncaster and Sheffield.
