Multi‑Level Garden Layout Plans for a Large Batley Garden with Outdoor Kitchen

Designing a large, multi‑level garden gives me the opportunity to create a space that feels structured, welcoming and perfectly suited to family life. This Batley project allowed me to combine strong architectural elements with generous entertaining areas, all tied together with natural materials and planting. As someone who specialises in Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster and Sheffield garden design, I always aim to create gardens that feel beautifully resolved and practical for everyday living.

Overall Structure and Multi‑Level Design

The garden is arranged across several levels, each with its own purpose and atmosphere. The retaining walls at the rear and side of the garden form the structural backbone, helping to manage the changes in height while giving the space a sense of permanence. I designed the layout so the movement between levels feels natural, with steps positioned to guide you through the garden without interrupting the flow.

A Connected, Cohesive Layout

The levels are visually linked through consistent materials, planting and sightlines. This creates a garden that feels unified from the moment you step outside, despite the scale and height differences.

Sandstone Paving and Cobble Set Detailing Around the Property

The paving that wraps around the property forms the foundation of the design. I specified sandstone paving for its warm, natural tones and timeless character, with cobble set edging to define the edges and add texture. This combination works beautifully with the architecture of the house and sets the tone for the rest of the garden.

A Practical Circulation Route

This paved route provides easy access around the property and connects directly to the steps that lead down into the main garden. The cobble sets help break up the expanses of paving and give the layout a crafted, detailed finish.

Main Patio with Pergola and Outdoor Kitchen

The main patio sits at the heart of the garden and forms the primary entertaining space. I designed this area with sandstone paving and cobble set detailing, creating a generous terrace that feels both elegant and welcoming. A pergola frames the space, adding height, shade and structure. It creates a sense of enclosure without blocking light, making it ideal for outdoor seating and social gatherings.

The layout also includes a fully integrated outdoor kitchen, positioned to serve both the main patio and the lawn area. This can include a built‑in grill, worktops and storage, creating a practical and stylish cooking zone that feels like a natural extension of the home.

A Flexible Outdoor Living Area

The pergola allows for climbing plants, lighting or outdoor heating, giving the client the option to create a cosy, atmospheric space that can be enjoyed throughout the year. The outdoor kitchen enhances the social potential of the garden, making it perfect for family gatherings and entertaining.

Stone Raised Beds to Match the Building

The raised beds surrounding the patio are constructed in stone to match the property, creating a seamless connection between the house and the garden. These beds introduce height and depth, allowing me to layer planting in a way that softens the hard landscaping and brings colour and texture into the space.

Planting That Enhances the Structure

The planting is arranged to frame views, highlight the pergola and guide the eye toward the lawn and upper levels. This creates a garden that feels alive and balanced throughout the seasons.

Rectangular Lawn for Family Play

The rectangular lawn forms a dedicated play area for the children. Its simple shape gives the garden a sense of calm and order, while providing plenty of space for games and activities. Positioned between the patio and the upper levels, the lawn acts as a green centrepiece that can be enjoyed from every angle.

A Practical, Family‑Friendly Space

The lawn is large enough for play while still leaving room for planting, pathways and seating areas. It creates a natural buffer between the more structured elements of the garden.

Side Patio with Dining Area and Timber Canopy

To the side of the property, I designed a dedicated dining area. This space is sheltered by a timber canopy, creating an outdoor room that feels connected to the house while still offering a sense of retreat. The paving continues in sandstone with cobble set detailing, ensuring consistency throughout the design.

A Comfortable, Social Space

The side patio is positioned to catch the light at key times of day, making it ideal for family meals or evening entertaining. It also connects back to the steps, creating a loop through the garden that feels intuitive and easy to navigate.

Planting Throughout the Garden

Planting plays a key role in softening the structure of the garden. I introduced a mix of evergreen shrubs, seasonal colour and textural contrast to ensure the space feels vibrant throughout the year. The planting frames the pathways, highlights the raised beds and enhances the transitions between levels.

A Balanced, Natural Atmosphere

The planting is arranged to complement the stonework, pergola and paving, creating a garden that feels both natural and refined.

Walkthrough Animation to Visualise the Layout

To help the client fully understand the design, I produced a walkthrough animation that shows how the garden flows from one level to the next. This visual tool highlights the relationship between the patios, lawn, steps and planting, making it easy to imagine how the space will feel once built.

Final Layout Summary

This Batley project showcases how thoughtful design can transform a large, multi‑level garden into a practical, family‑friendly and visually cohesive outdoor space. Whether I’m working on Pontefract, Wakefield, Doncaster or Sheffield garden design, my focus is always on creating gardens that feel personal, functional and beautifully crafted.
