Small Rear Garden Design in West Yorkshire with Indian Sandstone Paving and Fire Pit

Designing smaller gardens can be just as exciting as working with large outdoor spaces. For this rear garden project, I created concept plans and a walkthrough animation that show how thoughtful design can transform a compact space into a stylish, practical, and inviting outdoor living area. This West Yorkshire garden design includes Indian sandstone paving with cobble sets, brick raised beds, a timber canopy with roof, a fire pit, and a central lawn.

Indian Sandstone Paving with Cobble Sets

A key material in this design is Indian sandstone paving, which I used for both the patios and paths. The paving is bordered with cobble sets, adding definition and a traditional finish that works beautifully in West Yorkshire gardens.

Why I Chose Indian Sandstone for This Small Garden

  • Timeless character that blends well with brick and stone homes.

  • Durability to withstand the Yorkshire weather.

  • Varied tones and textures for a natural, attractive finish.

  • Cobble set borders to give structure and visual detail.

Brick Raised Beds for Planting

To bring greenery into the design, I added brick raised beds that provide height and depth to the planting scheme. Raised beds are practical in smaller gardens because they create strong lines and structure while making planting easier to maintain. They also soften the hard landscaping, helping the garden feel balanced and inviting.

Timber Canopy with Roof and Fire Pit

Outdoor living is at the heart of this design. I included a timber canopy with a solid roof, which provides shelter and makes the space usable throughout the year. Beneath the canopy, there’s room for seating, dining, and socialising.

To complement this, I designed a dedicated area with a fire pit, creating a warm and atmospheric focal point for evening gatherings. Together, the canopy and fire pit extend the usability of the garden well beyond summer.

Central Lawn for Balance and Relaxation

At the heart of the garden, I designed a central lawn. This adds a soft, open space that balances the hard landscaping and planting beds. The lawn acts as a visual anchor, keeping the garden layout simple, structured, and easy to enjoy.

Walkthrough Animation of the Garden Design

As part of the concept plans, I created a 3D walkthrough animation so the client could experience the design before any work began. This gives a clear sense of how the Indian sandstone paving, raised beds, timber canopy, fire pit, and lawn all work together in the layout. It’s a fantastic way to visualise the finished garden and make confident design decisions.
