Small Space, Big Impact: Garden Design Concept Plans for a Tiered Garden in Wakefield

Designing smaller gardens is all about smart use of space, level changes, and thoughtful features that enhance both form and function. For this compact rear garden in Wakefield, I developed a set of detailed garden design concept plans—brought to life with a full walkthrough animation—to create a multi-functional outdoor space that feels open, stylish, and inviting.

At MP Landscape & Garden Design, I approached this design by introducing two distinct patio areas on different levels, separated by a retaining wall softened with planting. This not only adds structure but makes the most of the garden’s natural slope.

The upper patio is designed as a cosy retreat, complete with a built-in fire pit, perfect for relaxing on cooler evenings. Just off this space is a small outdoor kitchen area, ideal for casual cooking and entertaining without taking up too much room.

On the lower level, the patio opens out onto the main garden, featuring Indian sandstone paving with cobble set borders to add texture and timeless appeal. A practical storage box has also been included in the layout—essential for keeping the space tidy and functional.

This small garden in Wakefield is a great example of how careful planning and level design can create a space that feels much larger than it is. If you’re working with a compact garden and want to make the most of every corner, I’d be delighted to help.
