Transforming Levels: Garden Design Concept Plans for a Large Sloping Garden in Castleford

Designing gardens with challenging levels is one of my favourite parts of landscape design. For this project in Castleford, I created large garden concept plans for a steeply sloping site—turning it into a series of dynamic, usable outdoor spaces. These plans, complete with a detailed walkthrough animation, showcase how I approached this unique garden with a creative, layered layout.

Practical Driveway and Woodland Planting

The garden begins with a tarmac driveway that provides clear and functional access to the property. To the left, I’ve planned a generous lawn framed by woodland-style planting, designed to soften the space while adding natural privacy and seasonal colour

Enclosed Fire Pit Area

On one side of the garden, I’ve created a dedicated fire pit area, enclosed by lush planting to offer a cosy, intimate space. This zone is perfect for relaxed evening gatherings with family and friends.

Retaining Walls, Raised Beds, and Outdoor Kitchen

As the site falls away steeply at the rear, my design cleverly uses retaining walls and brick raised beds to manage the levels, providing both structure and planting opportunities. A canopy-covered outdoor kitchen offers a sheltered, stylish entertaining area that feels naturally integrated into the landscape.(Discover more of my outdoor kitchen designs.

Decked Terrace with Views Across the Garden

From the upper level, steps lead to a decked terrace with a choice of glass or timber balustrade, creating a safe and elegant edge while offering elevated views across the garden. Another set of steps continues down to a lawn bordered with richly planted areas, anchoring the design with greenery and soft flow.(Watch other garden walkthrough animations to see similar multi-level projects.)

Transforming Steep Sites into Functional Gardens

This Castleford garden demonstrates how thoughtful design from MP Landscape & Garden Design can transform even the steepest site into a series of connected, purposeful spaces that are both beautiful and practical.
