Designing a Large Garden with Character
As part of my work with MP Landscape & Garden Design, I recently developed concept plans and a walkthrough animation for a large garden in Wakefield. This project allowed me to bring together practical features and creative design, showing how a plot of this scale can be transformed into a space that is both functional and beautiful.
Driveway and Entrance
The design begins with a driveway leading into the property, creating a welcoming approach and setting the tone for the rest of the garden. The entrance is carefully planned to balance practicality with visual appeal, ensuring the first impression is strong.
Rear Patio for Relaxation
At the back of the house, I designed a spacious patio for relaxing. This area is intended as a retreat, a place to enjoy the garden views and unwind. The paving is Indian sandstone with cobble sets, chosen for its natural warmth and timeless character.
Pathway Around the House
A path flows around the house, connecting different areas of the garden. This journey leads to a second patio, designed for outdoor dining and barbeques. By linking spaces together, the path creates a sense of movement and discovery throughout the plot.
Greenhouse, Raised Beds, and Chicken Run
Following the path further, the design incorporates a greenhouse and sleeper‑built raised beds for growing vegetables. Nearby, a large chicken run adds a practical and sustainable element to the garden. These features reflect the lifestyle of the client, combining productivity with enjoyment.
Pergola with Countryside Views
The path continues down into the landscape, arriving at a pergola positioned to take in the surrounding countryside. This structure frames the views and provides a sheltered spot to pause and appreciate the wider setting.
Pond and Seating Area
At the bottom right of the garden, I placed a large pond with a seating area. This water feature adds tranquillity and biodiversity, while the seating invites moments of reflection.
Planting and Lawns
Large planting areas and generous lawns complete the design. These spaces soften the hard landscaping, provide seasonal interest, and ensure the garden feels alive throughout the year.
A Garden for Wakefield and Beyond
This concept plan demonstrates how a large plot can be shaped into a cohesive outdoor environment. My approach to garden design in Wakefield, Pontefract, Doncaster, and Sheffield always balances lifestyle needs with creative vision. Whether it’s a patio for entertaining, a productive greenhouse, or a pergola to enjoy the views, each element is carefully considered to reflect the character of the site and the people who use it.
Conclusion
Through this project, I’ve shown how a detailed concept plan and walkthrough animation can bring a large garden to life before construction begins. From driveway to pond, every feature is designed to work together, creating a landscape that is practical, beautiful, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
