Designing large sloping gardens offers both challenges and opportunities, and this rear garden in Wakefield is a great example of how thoughtful planning and creative use of levels can transform a complex space into a stunning, functional landscape. My clients wanted to make the most of their existing patio while improving access, structure, and flow throughout the garden.
Working with Levels to Create Structure and Flow
This West Yorkshire garden design is centred around three main levels that follow the natural slope of the land. The upper patio, connected to the house, provides a perfect space for outdoor dining and relaxation. From here, steps lead down to a formal lawn area, giving a beautiful transition between the levels while maintaining a strong visual connection across the garden.
The use of levels allows each space to have its own identity while keeping the garden cohesive and easy to navigate.
Indian Sandstone Paving and Pergola for the Middle Terrace
To the right of the formal lawn, I designed an Indian sandstone patio framed by a timber pergola. This combination adds warmth, character, and texture to the space while creating a perfect semi-shaded seating area for entertaining. The pergola also provides structure for climbing plants, helping to soften the hard landscaping and blend it naturally into the garden.
A Large Lower Lawn with Fire Pit and Workshop Area
The lowest level of the garden opens out into a large lawn area, ideal for relaxation, play, and entertaining. In and around the existing trees, I designed a fire pit area and workshop zone, blending functionality with the natural beauty of the setting. The fire pit creates a welcoming social space, while the workshop makes practical use of the garden’s footprint without feeling intrusive.
Pathways and Planting for Year-Round Interest
A sandstone cobble set path winds gracefully around the lawn, connecting each area and creating a sense of continuity throughout the design. The borders are planted to provide texture, colour, and seasonal variety, framing the paths and enhancing the overall flow.
In the bottom right-hand corner, I included an arbour surrounded by planting — a quiet retreat for relaxation or reading that also adds a focal point to the garden’s design.
A Balanced and Functional West Yorkshire Garden Design
This Wakefield garden design demonstrates how thoughtful use of materials, levels, and features can bring balance and usability to a large outdoor space. The walkthrough animation helped my clients fully visualise the garden before any work began, ensuring every level and feature worked together seamlessly.
If you’re considering redesigning your sloping or multi-level garden, I’d be delighted to create a bespoke garden design tailored to your property and lifestyle. I design gardens and outdoor spaces across Pontefract, Wakefield, Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire area.
